1. Who we are

From the Japanese is published by Digitalbox Co., Ltd. (“we”), 2F-C, Shibuya Dogenzaka Tokyu Bldg., 1-10-8 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0043, Japan. You can reach us at letters@fromthejapanese.com.

2. What we collect

  • When you subscribe, we collect only your email address.
  • Kit, our email service, also records when you signed up, an approximate location based on your IP address, and whether you open our emails and click the links in them.
  • Our web host keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time) for security, troubleshooting and counting visits.

This site does not use cookies, tracking scripts or advertising trackers.

3. Why we use it, and on what basis

  • To send you our letters, manage your subscription, and see which letters readers find useful. Basis: your consent (for readers in the EU and the UK, Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw your consent at any time by unsubscribing.
  • To keep this site secure and working, and to count visits (server logs). Basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure website and counting its visits (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

4. Who handles it for us

  • Kit (kit.com), in the United States, stores your email address and sends our emails, under a data processing agreement with us.
  • A web hosting company in Japan hosts this website.

5. Transfers to the United States

Your email address is stored by Kit in the United States.

  • For readers in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland: Kit is certified under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and its data processing agreement includes the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Agreement.
  • For readers in Japan, and for everyone under Japanese law: we are a company in Japan, so Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information applies to us. Providing your email address to Kit counts as providing personal data to a third party in a foreign country, and we ask for your consent on the sign-up form. What you should know:
    • Country: the United States.
    • The US system: the United States has no single comprehensive federal law on personal information; there are federal laws for particular sectors and kinds of information, and state laws. Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission publishes a summary (in Japanese): https://www.ppc.go.jp/files/pdf/USA_report.pdf
    • Kit’s measures: a data processing agreement, certification under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and the Standard Contractual Clauses described above. Details: https://kit.com/gdpr

You can withdraw your consent at any time by unsubscribing from any email. If you are in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to the data protection authority where you live or work. If you are in Japan, you can request disclosure, correction or suspension of use under the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. Email letters@fromthejapanese.com. We will reply within one month.
